ChatGPT is merging Chat and Work, and from December Plus, Pro and Business share one token allowance with Codex
Announced · Published · By Contractor AI Shop
OpenAI is folding Work's agent features into the main ChatGPT chat, first for select users. From December, Plus, Pro and Business usage becomes one token-based allowance shared with Codex. Instant chats won't count against it, and OpenAI expects most users won't hit resets more often.
Key facts
- OpenAI's Help Center says that starting in December, Plus, Pro and Business usage will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex and measured in tokens; Instant chat won't draw from it. OpenAI Help Center
- OpenAI says more advanced models and complex tasks use more allowance; remaining usage and reset times will show in Settings → Usage, and at the limit you can wait, upgrade or buy credits. OpenAI Help Center
- Per an OpenAI email reported by TechCrunch, the merged Chat and Work experience goes to select users first; Codex stays a separate experience in the desktop app. TechCrunch (Ivan Mehta)
- The Decoder calls the change a sign of 'the end of all-you-can-prompt pricing'; that's The Decoder's analysis, not OpenAI's wording. The Decoder (Matthias Bastian)
- OpenAI's help page showed only a relative 'Updated' time when we checked Nov 2 (about midday Nov 1 PT); TechCrunch (Nov 2) and The Decoder (Nov 1) provide dated coverage. OpenAI Help Center
Our take: what it means for contractors
If you or your office managers lean on ChatGPT agents or Codex on a Plus plan, you may hit limits sooner from December. Quick everyday questions on Instant won't count. Watch Settings → Usage the first few weeks before deciding whether to upgrade.
What we don't know yet
- Exact December start date
- Token amounts per plan
- When the merged tab rolls out widely
- OpenAI hasn't published a dated announcement post; the help page carries only a relative timestamp
