AI coding agents can be hijacked by an AGENTS.md file in your Downloads folder
Announced · Published · By Contractor AI Shop
Security firm Forever Security says it caught a malicious AGENTS.md file in a customer's Downloads folder that told OpenAI's Codex coding agent to install a known-malicious npm package. In tests, the researchers also used a similar file against Claude Code to expose a login token.
Key facts
- Forever Security reported finding a malicious AGENTS.md in a customer's Downloads folder that instructed OpenAI's Codex agent to install the npm package "function-color," which Forever blocked; Mashable links that package to the MALFEX campaign documented by Checkmarx. - Researchers reproduced a related attack on Codex in an isolated machine and showed a technique against Claude Code that leaked OAuth tokens; Mashable says the Claude Code test worked about half the time. BleepingComputer (Bill Toulas)
- Forever did not establish how the file got onto the customer's machine; it showed a web page can save a file to Downloads without a prompt in some browsers. BleepingComputer found Brave prompted before saving; Chrome, Edge and Firefox show download notifications. BleepingComputer (Bill Toulas)
- Forever, quoted by BleepingComputer: "There is nothing here for OpenAI or Anthropic to patch." Their advice is not to run coding agents in Downloads, to check unfamiliar AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md files, and to keep sandboxes and approval prompts on. BleepingComputer (Bill Toulas)
Our take: what it means for contractors
If anyone in your office is trying Codex or Claude Code, the fix is simple habits: never open an agent in your Downloads folder, read any AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md you didn't write before letting an agent work in that folder, and leave approval prompts and sandboxing on. This applies to local agent setups too.
What we don't know yet
- How the file reached the customer's machine
- How many machines or companies have been targeted
- Whether OpenAI or Anthropic will change how their agents treat instruction files in folders like Downloads
- Forever's telemetry figures (about half of customers run an agent in Downloads) are the company's own and unverified
