OpenAI makes its Decisions API generally available, built on GPT-6 Luna

OpenAI's Decisions API, built with GPT-6 Luna, is now generally available. It answers bounded questions from text, images and JSON. OpenAI says it's up to 10x faster than Luna through the Responses API. It costs $0.10 per million input tokens, $0.01 cached, with no output-token charges.
Key facts
- Per OpenAI, it returns one of three answer types: a predicate (the probability a condition is true), a choice from your options, or a score against a rubric. OpenAI
- OpenAI says you can now ask up to 400 questions per request, twice the previous limit, and it added a native GPT-Live integration, prompt caching, and inference residency in the US and EU. Zero Data Retention is available to eligible customers. OpenAI
- OpenAI quotes Box saying the Decisions API delivered about 5x faster route selection on 30 certificate of insurance cases, with the same accuracy as the Responses API, in Box's evaluation. That's a customer claim published by OpenAI. OpenAI
- TechCrunch reports it was announced at OpenAI's developer day on Sept. 29, competes with startup TypeSafe's Jev, and ranks eighth on the AIM System One Index and 14th on the Artificial Analysis Decision Index. TechCrunch (Tim Fernholz)
- OpenAI's API product lead Nikunj Handa told TechCrunch the speed gain is "shrinking things from one to three seconds to 100, 120, 180 milliseconds." TechCrunch (Tim Fernholz)
- Gadgets 360 reports the limit was 200 questions per request during the public beta. Gadgets 360 (Dhruv Raghav)
Our take: what it means for contractors
This is the cheap, fast "sort and check" layer behind useful contractor automations: routing leads and RFIs, flagging expired or non-compliant certificates of insurance, and tagging photos or documents. Box's COI routing result is a vendor claim, but it's exactly a contractor workflow. It's a developer API, so most contractors will feel it through the software that adopts it, not by signing up directly.
What we don't know yet
- Independent accuracy tests on construction documents
- Which construction software vendors will build on it
- How speed holds up with hundreds of questions per request
