Hugging Face releases Llama Windows, a free tray app for running local AI models on Windows 11
Announced · Published · By Contractor AI Shop
Hugging Face and the llama.cpp team released Llama Windows, a free, open-source Windows 11 tray app. It downloads models from the Hugging Face Hub in one click, runs them locally with llama.cpp, and serves an OpenAI-compatible API on your PC.
Key facts
- The app is a native WinUI 3 tray app; it installs llama.cpp if needed, with no admin rights required. Hugging Face
- It runs a local OpenAI-compatible server at localhost:9931 that other apps and agents can use. Hugging Face
- It launches with support for Windows 11 on Arm and NVIDIA's RTX Spark platform. Thurrott.com
- It supports both x64 and ARM64 Windows 11 PCs and is available as a free download. Neowin
Our take: what it means for contractors
This is the easiest free way yet to run a private AI model on an office Windows PC. Try it on a recent PC with a decent GPU, load a small model, and test it on your own specs or contract language before paying for anything. Keep anything sensitive local.
What we don't know yet
- How well it performs on PCs without an NVIDIA GPU
- How it compares with LM Studio over time
- Long-term maintenance commitments
